Good morning! Today is kind of a big day for me....  I'm having surgery on a torn labrum in my shoulder. I tore it about a year ago and decided it was time to get it fixed so that I can work out and stay active without restrictions and get some quality of life back.

For those that don't know, I am very passionate about fitness - I used to compete in Crossfit competitions before I got hurt and I absolutely loved it. Since getting injured (which, by the way, did NOT happen at the gym) I've felt very limited and have lost a lot of motivation, both in my diet and my workout routines. I'm hoping that this surgery will help me get back on track as I will have to reprioritize a lot of things in life while I recover.

I'm not too worried about the surgery itself, but I am freaking out a little bit about what I'm going to eat these next few months! I am constantly hungry and I have a hard time keeping myself in check (meaning I like to sneak extra snacks and cookies.....). Being that it's Christmas and Christmas cookies will be prevalent, I know I'll have to stay mentally tough. I figured a lot of you have the same problems this time of year, surgery or not, so I thought I'd share some of the things that help me stay motivated.

  1. Find Accountability - Whether it be a friend, husband, trainer, nutrition coach, whatever....having someone to report to each and every day forces you to keep yourself in check both in your workouts and your diet.
  2. Create a Workout Routine You Enjoy - Healthy/fit people workout because it is a part of their routine, not because they always want to! Seriously. Finding a workout you love doing and making it a daily habit will help you stay healthy long term and help you survive the holidays without going too overboard.
  3. Stick to an Attainable Meal Plan - whether that is counting macros, eating paleo, following beach body or tone it up, whatever! Just putting forth effort and being consciously aware of what you're eating is a step in the right direction.
  4. Set a Goal - I always work so much harder when there is a goal in mind. For me, I have to have a reason to go hard, so a competition, a race, or something like that is the extra push I need.
  5. Enjoy Holiday Treats in Moderation - because you only live once! I'm a strong believer in living your life. If you enjoy treats in moderation, you won't ever feel like you missed out and you won't feel the need to indulge like crazy. You also won't feel guilty if you keep the moderation in check.

I hope those tips help you get through this fun season with little-to-no guilt! In the mean time, I'll be accepting thoughts, prayers and good vibes for a quick recovery on my shoulder! 😉
