'Tis the season for Christmas Cards!! One member of the Martin family LIVES for taking family photos and the other three feel quite the opposite. I'll let you guess which is which, HA! Needless to say, I start planning our yearly family photo months in advance because it is one of the only times C will agree to getting a professional photo done with me! Luckily my dad is a professional photographer, so that makes it easy. We don't have kids yet so we always make sure to include the pups.
A quick Pinterest search will get you lots of Christmas card inspo for magical winter wonderland scenes, Christmas tree farm backdrops and matching holiday themed outfits complete with fur, velvet and sequins but sometimes those things just aren't feasible. It isn't always realistic to hike into the snowy winter woods in a sparkly dress with a happy family and a photographer in tow...although I wish it was!
I'm sharing some of our previous Christmas card photos below (and a sneak peek at the 2018 version above) to hopefully give you some inspo on outfits, location, poses, etc! All of these outfits were clothes we already had in our closets and the photos were shot within ten minutes and were taken in my parent's backyard or on the side of the road just down the street from their house. With as easy as these shoots were, I love how the photos and cards turned out I think they still have that Christmas feel to them!

My number one tip for Christmas card outfits is to incorporate winter/Christmas accessories without going over board - like plaid scarves, furry boots or a red lip....that way you can use/display the photos year round! I also like to coordinate our outfits instead of straight up matching. For example, if I have on a solid color, C might wear a plaid (with my color incorporated) and vice versa.
For my outfits in particular, I like to combine patterns and textures. I also like to pair dressy and casual pieces together to give it a little bit of a special feel without looking like I'm heading to a NYE party, ya feel me? Tulle skirts with plaid tops, chunky sweaters with a mini skirt or leather skinnies and heels....that kind of thing!
I ordered my cards from Minted this year but I have also used Shutterfly and Basic Invite in the past! Minted is currently offering 25% off + free shipping with code CM2018 - offer ends Wednesday night!! They all have special offers and discounts pretty regularly so just check and see which one fits your budget and which card design fits your style. I especially like that Minted and Basic Invite will address your envelopes for you - such a huge time saver!
Do you send Christmas cards every year? I love sending and receiving them. I save them and look back on them every year when I unpack my Christmas decor. I need some ideas on cuter ways to display them, though, instead of just throwing them on the fridge....it gets covered too quickly! If you have any fun suggestions, leave a comment below.
