Best of OKC Desserts
Monday, May 14, 2018
Not so little known fact about me - I have the world's biggest sweet tooth. Seriously. I think it is 100% necessary and acceptable to eat dessert after every meal. I normally have decent self control with my diet, but if I take one small bite of a delicious dessert, I'm screwed (I type this as I eat my third plate of homemade banana pudding from our Mother's Day cookout).
That being said, I like to think I'm a pretty good judge when it comes to sweets! I know what is worth the splurge and what isn't. Below are the best desserts in Oklahoma City by category....in my personal opinion!
Ice Cream
No secret here, I've been a Roxy's Ice Cream fan since the beginning. So much so that we had their food truck serve ice cream at our wedding in place of a groom's cake! The salted caramel ice cream is one of my favorite things on planet earth. Roxy's started out as a food truck and has grown to have multiple brick and mortar locations across the city - I'm so proud!
Cupcakes
Cuppie's and Joe has my heart! I wish I lived close enough to make this my daily coffee shop and have a "usual" order. Or if I worked remotely, I would totally work from their front living room all the time. It is located a little old house that has been renovated and turned into a coffee shop and cupcake cafe. Coffee + Cupcakes......my favorites! I am madly in love with their Neverland cupcake - it tastes like a peanut butter cookie in cupcake form and has a peanut butter chocolate melted inside. Yes and amen. Boom Boom Pow (salted caramel) is a close second.
Pie
Pie Junkie is a household name in Oklahoma City. I can't count the number of times I've picked up a pie for a dinner party, holiday or wedding shower. Their pies taste homemade and are always delicious! I am a sucker for the Drunken Turtle (chocolate + salted bourbon caramel on a graham crust) and the Peanut Butter Chocolate. You can buy whole pies or by the slice! Be sure to check their hours, though, they aren't always open.
Side Note: You can also purchase single serve frozen chicken pot pies here, as well, and they are to.die.for. The perfect thing to keep in your freezer and have on hand for busy nights!
Cookies
I'm kind of a cookie snob. I love homemade cookies SO MUCH and there aren't really any local cookie shops in Oklahoma City that can top my own baking skills. Sorry not sorry? HOWEVER, there are several chains that I can't turn down: Chick-fil-A (best chocolate chip cookie award), Eileen's (best sugar cookie award) and Insomnia (best chocolate mint cookie award). Also, Cuppie's and Joe makes some pretty darn good cookies in addition to their cuppies!
I think I need to open a cookie shop.....yes?
Snocones
The summer I turned 16, I got a snow cone almost every single day...because I could. I wish I had that metabolism now......ha! Katiebug's Shaved Ice is a favorite because their flavors are so unique (lots of fresh, herbal notes - my fav!) and their little trailer is just so cute! Plus, bonus, they serve hot chocolate. Rumor has it their opening a store front in Midtown soon!
Milkshake
Tucker's Onion Burgers get my vote, here! Their shakes are very classic and "diner-esque" - as they should be. I'm a fan of the strawberry; it always cures my cravings. I've heard Kong's has some pretty fantastic alcoholic shakes, but I haven't tried them myself.
Other
I couldn't write this post without including Whiskey Cake! It doesn't really fit into a category, so it got it's own category. Fitting, because there is nothing quite like it. Whiskey Cake is the signature dessert from Whiskey Cake! It is a chocolate cake topped with a toffee bourbon sauce, pecans and whipped cream and all I have to say is YUM. It is melt in your mouth good and I can't turn it down.
After writing this, it seems I'm particularly fond of salted caramel and peanut butter everything haha. I guess I knew that deep down! OKC friends, do you agree with my picks? Are there any I'm missing or any I need to try? I'm always down for sampling new sweets!
What "Best of OKC" post do you want to see next month? So far I have boutiques, brunch, coffee and cocktails. Let me know in the comments.
